Dark Room by Phyllis Christopher is coming home to San Francisco with a very special launch at the Folsom Street Community Centre on 21 August! It’s the first and possibly only IRL event with all of the contributors – Phyllis will be joined by Susie Bright, Laura Guy, Shar Rednour and Michelle Tea. The event will be hosted by Center for Sex and Culture and hosted by Carol Queen.

Phyllis says (via her Instagram): “we’ll share stories, do a few readings …I’ll do a slide show talk with some never before seen out takes from San Francisco in the 90’s. As I’ve been hunting through my archive I’ve been thinking about how we build beautiful queer families and this book is a collaboration, a celebration of that…it’s a victory that it exists at all!”

Books will be available to buy at the event. Please wear a mask if you can.

Folsom Street and The LEATHER & LGBTQ Cultural District are partnering to host the block between 8th and 9th Streets as the Kinky and Queer Block of Sunday Streets. Come by to visit our vendors, enjoy entertainment and demos on our stage, and view the work of local artists. The block will have a section suggested for 18+ only.

SOMA West will be set up around 7th and Folsom, with some favorite neighborhood organizations including SF Parks Alliance, Livable City, SOMA Pilipinas, and SOMArts! There will be delicious food and coffee vendors, cultural performances, and more. Come join the fun and celebrate the sheer wonder of taking the streets back from cars. Betty Martin and Marcia Baczynski have been learning and teaching consent together for over 16 years. They met through Cuddle Party (a consent workshop) and cheered each other on in the development of their own work - Betty’s Wheel of Consent, and Marcia’s Asking for What You Want. And now they have written their own books, which they will read from!

Marcia’s Creating Consent Culture simply and clearly describes what consent is, including clarifying some misconceptions, and outlines a 3 hour workshop for youth and teens. Co-authored with Erica Scott.

Marcia Baczynski is an internationally-recognized speaker, writer, coach and expert on sexual communication, relationships and consent. Her primary mission is to help adults to overcome shame and get in touch with what they truly want – romantically, sexually and relationally – even if it’s off the beaten path.
